Mt Buller / Australia: New fixed-grip Doppelmayr quad chairlift for 2012

Mt Buller skiers and snowboarders celebrated the news of a $4.5million investment in a new chairlift and the roll out of a high-tech, resort-wide RFID ticketing system for the 2012 snow season.

The new fixed-grip Doppelmayr quad chairlift will service the popular area between the Horse Hill and Grimus chairlifts and replace the Burnt Hut Chairlift lost to lightning damage in early 2010. Construction is set to commence soon to ensure completion for the next snow season.

Laurie Blampied, General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, is enthusiastic about getting the new project started, “This new lift is a vital addition for skiers and boarders at Mt Buller, particularly day visitors who can access this popular terrain directly from Horse Hill.  We’ve taken the opportunity with the new lift to make significant improvements and open up a greater ski area, improve the flow of people and remove the lift towers from the Burnt Hut ski run. The construction of this new lift is the first step in the rebirth of this very popular and important part of the resort which will include the replacement of existing lifts with new chairlifts, more user friendly carpet lifts and rebranding the entire precinct”

“Mt Buller continues to invest and improve the mountain to reward the enthusiastic skiers and boarders who spend time here each winter season.  We are all passionate about this mountain and these investments demonstrate our ongoing commitment to seeing Mt Buller maintain its position as Australia’s premier mountain resort and provide the foundation for future growth.”

Mt Buller is the only ski resort in Australia to build any new chairlifts in the past seven years and maintains the largest ski lifting network in Victoria and with 13 chairlifts shares the record for the most number of chairlifts in an Australian resort. The new chairlift, will be the third new chairlift installed at Mt Buller since 2005.  It will span 530 metres with a vertical rise of 135 metres and offers enhanced safety features and creature comforts for skiers and boarders including individual footrests.

In support of the new chairlift Mt Buller are also expanding snowmaking operations on the Burnt Hut Spur and new 200m long trail with fully automated snowmaking operations being installed this summer.

Mt Buller’s guests will also enjoy a new high-tech lift ticketing system for winter 2012 as the resort upgrades to RFID technology.

Laurie Blampied explains, “This new technology is all about streamlining operations and getting our guests out of queues and where they’d rather be – on the slopes.  RFID enabled passes enhance options for guests to manage their transactions online before they arrive, easy one-step registration, better security and convenience and more time on the snow.  These new systems also give us options to deliver flexible products, offer rewards and timely offers for pass holders at the click of a button.”

In addition to discounted ‘early bird’ sales for season passes Mt Buller has launched some new season pass options to provide greater flexibility and savings for loyal pass holders for 2012.

The new passes enable skiers and boarders to get on the slopes at off-peak times and pay considerably less. “Mt Buller is Australia’s most accessible major ski resort and we attract a strong visitation across the winter.  To deliver the best quality experience for our loyal skiers and snowboarders we are focused on delivering flexible ticketing and passes that provide choice. The new RFID tickets make new products possible such as the off-peak pass for those who wish to avoid the popular weekend and holiday periods,” explains Mr Blampied.

Discounted 2012 Mt Buller Season Passes go on sale at www.mtbuller.com.au from Monday 7 November starting from just $600 for adults and $400 for children aged through to Year 12.
